What is an electrical switch board & how does it work?
Most Singaporeans understand an electrical switch board as a DB electrical board but not many actually knows what it is and how it really works. Most homeowners disregard the importance of knowing how it really works but it is extremely vital to know the basics in an event of an electrical power failure or other common electrical power problems.
An electrical switch board is a component of an electricity supply system that divides an electrical power feed into subsidiary circuits, while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a common enclosure. It maintains the electric current in your home and provides several options for you to control the subsidiary circuits concurrently.
The main reason for switchboard services in Singapore to be provided by reliable electrician in Singapore is the possibility of escalation to other electrical problems. If you are frequently facing power trips or power failures in Singapore, or electrical wiring problems, this could likely be hints that your electrical switchboard is faulty and needs immediate attention. Please feel free to contact EM Electrical Engineering for our certified electrician to assist you in a non-obligatory electrical troubleshooting.
Where is your electrical switch board located?
Your electrical switch board is most commonly found in a cupboard inside HDB flats. It is usually wall mounted from a separate entity from your electrical plugs or circuits. It can also be called as the ‘master control’ of all electrical currents running in your home.
Importance of Annual shut down servicing of electrical switch board
Since the electrical switch board is your final back up plan should a power failure occurs, it is extremely important to know when your electrical switch board is due for servicing. In the event of a power failure in Singapore and your electrical switch board is faulty, it is impossible to troubleshoot these problems yourself at home, resulting in unnecessary money spent before even any attempt of reconciliations of the electrical problems.
Home safety is important and knowing that you do not have issues with your switch board may give you a peace of mind. The lifespan of the electrical switch board shortens with usage, and it is vital for you to keep a maintenance report/record. A maintenance file should be established and should include the following:
1) A record of all installed switch boards and their maintenance schedule
2) A list of items which have to be inspected and what adjustments to be checked
3) A record of past inspections and test results
With these records on hand, it should give you a clearer idea of when is a good time for you to send your electrical switch board for maintenance and service repair works.

Parts of a distribution box
A distribution box consists of 3 more electrical parts, namely,
• Main switch (MCCB – Moulded Case Circuit Breaker)
• Trip switch (RCCB – Residual Current Circuit Breaker)
• Circuit Breakers (CBs)
Main Switch (MCCB):
The main switch is located in the distribution box. It’s the first electrical part receiving electricity from the electric meter and acts as a route to take down the electricity throughout the house as required.
There are 2 wires coming from the electric meter, namely the live wire and the neutral wire. These wires are connected to main switch. When the main switch is off, the electric supply is stopped since it is disconnected by the 2 wires.
Trip Switch (RCCB):
The trip switch is a protective fuse that protects people and the appliance and it is the primary main goal of the trip switch. It is designed to interrupt a circuit automatically in the event of an overloading emergency. Although it acts as a fuse, it is actually a circuit breaker to break the affected circuit when necessary. The electric current from the main switch is connected to the trip switch via the 2 wires.
When there is a fault in any of the circuits, the switch opens and trips automatically, causing the power supply to be disconnected.
Circuit breakers (CBs):
Circuit breakers is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit. Since its functionality is common with the trip switch, it serves to interrupt current flow once a fault is detected.
